The Low-Down On LED Face Masks

The Low-Down On LED Face Masks

LED face masks have been around for a while now, but they’ve had a resurgence recently for sure. The most compelling thing about an LED mask for me is that they can be used from home, meaning that I can indulge in a skincare treatment that will visibly make a difference while sitting at home in my comfy clothes watching Netflix – heaven!

A few years ago at Stylist Live, there was a demonstration showcasing a product with a green, blue and red light. I was really excited by this product and went on to purchase one which came with a hefty price tag. As much as I loved the product and wanted to use it as much as I could, the light was in a handheld device, meaning that I had to invest in expensive serums to be able to use the device, and then sit and move it around my face for a significant time each day.

LED masks are SO convenient because unlike other older devices, you can place the mask on your face and go about your day. I did a lot of investigation when it came to LED masks and I decided I wanted to go for a mask that did only red light, as I wanted something that had a powerful punch and I wanted my red light to be as near infrared as possible.

The purpose of an LED face mask is to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin and to reduce inflammation and redness. I’d been reading a lot of reviews from LED face mask users and many people said there was a significant reduction in lines and wrinkles, and some even said that they felt that they had achieved botox-like improvements in the skin – brill!

I didn’t want to invest a huge amount of money in a mask before trying it out, but I also didn’t want to use something cheap on my skin, so I chose what felt like a good ‘middle of the road’ option for me and that option was the No7 Laboratories’ Age-Defying LED Mask.

The No7 Laboratories’ Age-Defying LED Mask is red and near infrared LED light and is designed to target ageing beneath the skin which should help to give a more radiant complexion. The main thing for me was the claim that it can help visibly reduce lines as this is something I’m looking to protect against now, so that I don’t have to do reversal skincare and treatments in the future… fingers crossed!

It’s recommended that you use the mask for ten minutes a day and no more within 24 hours, however after a lot of research, I decided to use the mask for 30 mins three times a week. I did get a little carried away (as I always do), and used it a few days in a row and I did notice some redness on my nose, however the mask does press against my nose and I wondered if this was more a result of the physical pressure from the mask rather than a result of the light, however to be on the safe side and also to ensure that the mask is working as effectively as possible, I’ve now gone back down to three times a week 🙂

So far I’ve been using the mask for about a month and I can’t say for certain that I’ve seen results that can be specifically attributed to the mask, however I can say that my skin has had far less breakouts, it feels like a smoother and nicer texture, and I genuinely feel like it’s more plump and vibrant.

I love the mask as a part of my skincare routine because it’s so easy and unobtrusive there really is no reason to dislike it or not use it. The mask charges using a USB, so I pop it on charge once a week to ensure it’s always fully charged and I put it on my face when I’m doing some housework or sitting at my desk working. The mask has a velcro strap that goes around the back of the head, so it’s secure and can’t fall off.

There are parts of the mask that don’t sit flush with my skin, but to be honest I actually prefer this because the light is still reaching my skin, but it’s not pressing on my face which isn’t a problem most of the time, but in order to have it tight enough to be able to walk around, it does become quite tight on my nose as I explained earlier.

So far, I really recommend this mask as a step towards stronger and more professional treatments. If you want to do the best you can to prevent lines and wrinkles, and you want to try something to supplement your skincare, an LED mask is a great step.

I’ve included a range of masks depending on your budget, including the No7 Laboratories’ Age-Defying LED Mask that I purchased.

If you try one let me know how it goes and if you see any results!
