Believe me when I say that even if you’re a fashionista, a shopaholic, or total hoarder when it comes to clothes, having a capsule wardrobe will make your life so much easier.
As a personal stylist, it’s become a mission of mine to create the most versatile and wearable capsule wardrobe for my clients, and is highly requested by pretty much all of my clients too.
At first, it can feel impossible, but it’s surprisingly doable. You just need to get a little ruthless and follow a few key tips.
Step One: Know Your Body Shape, Style Personality, and Seasonal Colours
I know I’d say this as a stylist, but this is such an important place to start. Understanding your body shape, style personality, and seasonal colours means everything you wear, especially your key pieces, works hard for you, and it also acts as a bit of a roadmap for you to follow.
Your wardrobe should make you look and feel your best, and this foundation ensures your choices flatter your figure and suit your colouring, and style choices fit your personality and overall vibe.
Step Two: Start With Versatile Basics
For some of us this could be classic tees, fitted tops, tailored trousers, classic jeans, and neutral layering pieces. For other style personalities these could be big bold pieces, or something completely different like only natural materials etc – this is where knowing your style personality is quite essential.
These are the items you’ll wear over and over again, and they make putting together outfits quick and effortless.
Step Three: Build a Cohesive Colour Palette
Creating your wardrobe around a cohesive colour palette makes mixing and matching so much easier. Choose a few of your colour palettes ‘neutral’ shades as your base and then add a couple of accent colours that reflect your personality and the bolder colours in your palette. This keeps everything coordinated and ensures no piece feels out of place – remember your ‘neutrals’ and ‘bold’ colours completely depend on your colouring and what is neutral to me, might not be a neutral to you.
Step Four: Invest in Key Statement Pieces
Even a minimalist wardrobe needs a few statement items that elevate your outfits. This could be a tailored blazer, a great dress, a versatile jacket, or a signature coat. These pieces are the ones that make even a simple outfit feel polished and intentional.
Step Five: Prioritise Quality Over Quantity
A capsule wardrobe isn’t about having less for the sake of it, it’s about making every piece count. Choose items that are well-made, durable, and timeless. Fewer pieces that you love and wear often will serve you far better than a wardrobe full of items you rarely touch.
Step Six: Edit and Curate Regularly
Your capsule wardrobe should evolve with your lifestyle. Every season, take the time to edit and curate what you own. Let go of anything that doesn’t fit, that you haven’t worn, or that doesn’t align with your style goals. This keeps your wardrobe functional, stress-free, and tailored to you. You can sell any pieces that don’t serve you, and re-invest with pieces that do!
