Autumn is finally here!! Hooray!!
I say finally but to be honest this year has just flown by for me (because literally nothing has happened of course), so I’m actually quite surprised that were coming to the end of 2020. It’s not been the best year for anyone let’s face it and I genuinely feel like time stood still during March and it won’t be until next March that time will start again and we can pretend this year never happened.
As much as we’ve been so incredibly lucky to have a great summer (lord knows if there’s anything we’ve all needed it’s a good summer to soften the blow of this year), I felt like I was associating summer with lockdown and I just wanted things to move on. The late heatwave we just experienced was amazing and I, more than anyone, love to bask in the summer heat, but I need to welcome in some change.
Autumn is such a brilliant time of year for change; the cold weather and fresher air is probably my most favourite part of the season. I feel like autumn brings mental clarity and a whole new outlook on everything. The change between summer and autumn is far more drastic than other seasonal changes which means you can change up everything in a very short period of time. Really, everything; your home, wardrobe, food, evening routine – everything.
It’s the time to completely overhaul your wardrobe, going from tiny summer dresses to chunky knits and boots, a total dichotomy and I love that drastic change. You can change up the vibe in your home getting rid of soft light fabrics and colours and swapping them for thick blankets, fairy lights, candles and cosy home cooked comfort food.
All of sudden were all spending more time at home and our evenings are much longer and cosier than they were before, meaning that we need to be ready to embrace the cold, brisk, crunchy autumn days and I’m here to help.
Here are some of the essentials that you need to embrace the change of season and make the most of autumn.
The cold weather is drawing in and what’s better than layering big chunky knits? Chunky knits are my favourite things to style and wear because they’re so effortless and easy and the ultimate when it comes to cosy comfort. My favourite places to shop for knits are H&M, Zara and Topshop.
A great way to toughen up an outfit is chunky boots. This is great for those of you who like to transition from a summer wardrobe into a more wintery vibe as you can wear your cute summer dress and layer jumpers and chunky boots to bring it from sizzling summer into cool crisp autumn.
If you don’t have a candle for every season (day/room/mood – am I too excessive??), then who even are you? Candles are the quickest, easiest and most effective way to feel warm, cosy and festive. Homesense is obviously a great place to get candles but given a lot of us are avoiding the shops at the moment I’ve been loving ordering from Amazon and direct from Yankee Candle.
Again, on par with candles – one of the quickest and easiest ways to get really festive and make your home super warm and cosy. Fairy lights go with everything, in every room, for any occasion and I love to fill my home with warm fairy lights and use these instead of ceiling lights or harsh lamps. There’s nothing more inviting than coming in from the cold to a twinkly warm lit cosy home.
So you have your fairy lights, autumnal candles and you’re ready to cosy up. The thing thats missing from your life is a big cosy blanket – the most perfect way to chill of the sofa this autumn.
Pumpkin Spice latte
So cliche, but so. damn. good! I have to be really careful with coffee (I shouldn’t have it at all really), but I do have a decaf latte in Starbucks when I can because I’m just addicted and they steam almond milk better than anyone I know. If you’re still going out and about or you want to treat yourself, Starbucks is the home of the PSL and I do highly recommend, especially if you have allergies or look for dairy free milk alternatives.
For those of us cosying up at home or who don’t want to get their pumpkin spice fix from a coffee shop, there are tonnes of flavoured coffees and syrups to get the perfect at-home PSL.
A Good Book
I don’t know about you but throughout 2020 I think I’ve watched more Netflix than any human should over the duration of lockdown and quarantine – I can’t be alone here! As the nights draw in earlier, the last thing I want to be doing is spending even more time sat in front of a screen so I gravitate more than ever towards a good book. I love taking time before bed or during a hot bubbly bath to read and once I’m into a great book I pretty much can’t put it down until I’m done!
Baths are one of the best things about the weather getting colder. You can’t beat a hot bubble bath and of course, a bath bomb. I always use Lush bath bombs – everyone knows that these are the best bath bombs and you won’t find a better bath bomb anywhere. Guaranteed! On the odd occasion I have a bath without a Lush bath bomb it just isn’t the same. My favourite bath bombs at the moment are the IRL for Digital Detox Day which has a huge mix of scents and colours as the bath bomb starts to dissolve more and more and Tick Tock which is an orange tin man (I’m guessing it’s tick tock from The Wizard of Oz but I can’t find anything anywhere to confirm this! I love Tick Tock though and The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz were my favourite when I was little so I’m sticking with it)! He has popping candy and glitter and he’s bright orange so you get the most autumnal vibrant bath.
The Halloween collection is also amazing currently and so far I’ve used the pumpkin and glittery black bat, both I highly recommend. You can’t go wrong in Lush so head on over or buy online and you will be so happy you did!
I have flowers around my home all year round. I just love flowers, especially fresh and seasonal flowers. It’s nice to move on from the dainty and delicate flowers of summer to some beautiful orange and red deep coloured flowers of autumn. I either order my flowers from somewhere like Prestige Flowers, or I’ll pick some up when doing my food shopping or at the local farm shop. Flowers are also a great present for friends and family, particularly during lockdown and while we can’t see all of our friends and family together as receiving flowers instantly brightens your day and shows someone you really care. If someone sends me flowers they are my favourite person forever… just saying!
A festive mug instantly makes me feel more autumnal. For me, a mug is constant companion all day long as I drink tea like there’s no tomorrow. When you wake up and have your morning tea, a festive mug instantly lifts your mood and makes you feel warm and cosy. I have a beautiful autumnal mug from Homesense, but there are so many that can be delivered right to your door so you don’t even need to leave the house – you can stay in your safe cosy bubble!
