Nude Lip Colours
My plea for the perfect nude lip has been an ongoing saga for a very long time. I’ve learnt that avoiding concealer lips is actually quite a hard task to master and I was convinced that nudes were going to be a trend left for the blondes to rock.
Having a dark complexion means that most of the time I reach for a nude lip colour I end up washed out or looking like my foundation accidentally made it’s way over my entire face, however after a LOT of trial and error, I’ve found a few nudes that allows us brunettes to join the fun.
Here are some of my favourite ‘nude lips’ lipsticks for us brunettes, but feel free to try whatever your colouring or complexion!
I like to start with a liner to define the edges of my lips, so I recommend finding a liner that is true to your natural lip colour to use as a base. For me this is Mac’s Dervish. You can’t see it on my lips as it’s so close to my natural colour which makes it perfect for defining and exaggerating in a really natural way. Another favourite liner of mine for a more obvious line is Mac’s Spice. I also really love Soar which is the most versatile for me as it blends well with pretty much all of my nudes and pinks. I’m sure you’ve probably tried both as they’re the cult liners from the ‘Kylie Jenner Lip’ phase, but if not, give them a go. Spice is more orange than my natural colour so for a nude look that is more obvious, this is the one I go for.
Mac Mehr is a long term favourite lipstick. It’s more on the pinky side but is a great shade for brunette skin tone. It dries matt which means it stays in place for hours and doesn’t fade anywhere near as quickly as other lipsticks I’ve tried.
Mac Modesty is another one of my cult favourites. It’s more of a classic nude than the others, but what I love is that it’s a creme finish so is somewhere between a lipstick and a gloss. You can use it over a liquid lip to add shine and much needed moisture, or to create an ombre nude lip.
The Huda matt liquid lip colours are AMAZING. My favourite is the colour Muse, which is definitely much more on the dark side and not your typical nude, but for me this works really well when I want to go for a ‘nuder/muted look’. I use a thin layer for a truer nude effect, and apply a thicker layer for a much more intense look. Perfect for a day to night look too as you can just take the one liquid lip in your bag ready to layer up and you’re prepared for those spontaneous days that move into the night!
When I’m at home or just needing a little more moisture I use the Clarins Natural Lip Perfecter. This gloss is the perfect mix between a gloss and a lip oil. I love the light pink colour – not a shade I would usually go for, but as it’s a lighter gloss, the colour pay-off is much more subtle and sometimes almost unnoticeable. I keep this in my bag for when my lips need a treatment as well as a splash of colour.
I have so many more shades that I love and wear, but these are my most used which definitely means my most loved!
