I’ve recently been getting really into hojicha. For anyone who hasn’t tried it, hojicha is a Japanese roasted green tea, similar to matcha.
Unlike regular green tea, it’s roasted at a high temperature which gives it a really comforting, nutty flavour and a slightly toasted aroma. It’s low in caffeine, so it’s a great option if you want something warm and soothing without the jitters from coffee.
Why Hojicha is Great for You
There’s a lot to love about hojicha beyond just the taste. It’s packed with antioxidants, which are great for your skin and overall health. Because it’s roasted, it’s also gentler on the stomach than some other green teas, so it’s perfect if you’re sensitive to caffeine or find other teas a bit harsh. It’s also a really calming drink, which makes it a nice way to take a moment for yourself during a busy day.
How to Make a Hojicha Latte
Making a hojicha latte at home is really simple and feels a bit like a treat. I like to use almond milk for a creamy, nutty flavour. You can make it in the same way you would matcha – whisking the powder with hot water and then steaming your milk and topping this on the hojicha. I actually like to make both hojicha and matcha in my velvetiser as it’s so easy and comes out perfectly mixed and the ideal drinking temperature.
