A Thing For… Acai Bowls

Acai Bowls

Lately, I’ve been completely obsessed with acai bowls. They’ve become my go-to when I want something fresh, colourful and packed with goodness. There’s something about that perfect mix of creamy, fruity base with crunchy toppings that just hits the spot every time. I’ve been making them at home a lot recently and honestly, I think I’ve perfected my version.

The base
For the base, I use acai powder blended with frozen fruit – usually banana, blueberries and mango – and then add a splash of either water or almond milk depending on what I fancy. The frozen fruit gives it that thick, ice-cream-like texture, which is key for getting it right. I like to keep it on the thicker side so it feels more like a treat than a smoothie.

Toppings
Once the base is ready, that’s where the fun starts. I go a bit overboard with toppings but that’s the best part. My usuals are goji berries, mulberries, peanut butter, dark chocolate pieces and fresh strawberries. Sometimes I’ll throw in some granola, chia seeds or coconut flakes for extra crunch. I love that you can really make them your own – no two bowls ever end up looking the same.

A spirulina twist
Every now and then, I swap the acai powder for spirulina and make a spirulina bowl instead. I use the exact same base and toppings, just switch out the acai. I know the flavour isn’t for everyone, but I actually love it. It’s a bit earthier, but it still feels super fresh and energising.

Acai bowls have become such a staple for me. They’re quick to make, full of nutrients and just feel like a little moment of self-care in the day. Whether you’re into fruity acai or prefer the green goodness of spirulina, they’re such a great way to pack in something healthy while still feeling like a treat.
