My Latest Obsession – Reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates

I’ve been doing reformer Pilates on and off for about a year now, and I love it. It’s probably one of my favourite types of workout because it’s low impact but still really challenges your body. I come away feeling strong, stretched but also like I’ve actually worked every single muscle.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates that uses a machine called the reformer – it looks a bit like a sliding bed with springs, straps and pulleys. It was originally created by Joseph Pilates back in the early 1900s as a way to help people recover from injuries while still building strength and flexibility. The idea is all about control and alignment, and because the reformer adds resistance, you can really target and lengthen your muscles in a way that’s totally different to mat Pilates.

It’s one of those workouts that looks easy from the outside but completely humbles you once you’re on the reformer. The slow, controlled movements mean you can’t cheat your way through anything, and I love that. You feel every tiny muscle working, and it always surprises me how much you can do without any jumping or high-impact moves.

Reformer in Bristol

I’ve tried a few different studios around Bristol and I’m planning to try even more over the next few months. Every studio has its own style, and that’s something I really enjoy about reformer – some are more strength-focused, others more about stretching or flow. It keeps things interesting and makes every class feel a bit different.

I still love mat and barre Pilates, especially for a faster paced workout, but there’s just something about being on the reformer that I can’t get enough of. It pushes my body further in the best way and makes me feel stronger every time I do it.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve never tried reformer Pilates before, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s such a good mix of strength, control and movement, and you’ll leave feeling amazing. Whether you’re in Bristol or somewhere else, it’s definitely worth finding a local studio and giving it a go – just be prepared to fall in love with it like I have.
