To say I’m a sun worshiper is probably the biggest understatement there is. I’m pretty sure I was meant to exist as a gecko and bask in the sun all day, however I’m not and so here we are, testing out sun tan lotions to ensure that us sun worshipers are staying safe!
As much as I like to tan, I wear sunscreen to ensure that I’m tanning as safely as possible and to protect my skin from a variety of skin issues, with skin cancer being the biggest concern. I want to state here that I’m not a healthcare professional and that I urge you to do your research about staying safe and researching the dangers associated with tanning and sun damage. I’ve put a few links to helpful resources at the bottom of this post so please click through and read them.
I’ve spoken with doctors before about tanning and being in the sun during getting my moles checked (which I do every couple of years because I have a couple of larger moles which I like to keep an eye on), and the advice I have always received is that tanning safely is fine, but burning is bad. If you burn one time, your risk of cancer is far greater than tanning often with sun protection and avoiding peak times of the day (see resources and check with your own doctor or physician for personal advice). Because of the advice I’ve been given, I like to research the sun cream or sun tan lotion I’m using because I’m not going to be sitting in the shade when summer roles around.
There’s been a few brands that I’ve used for years, and others I’ve discovered more recently and would love to share my thoughts with my fellow sun lovers.
I’ve used Piz Buin for as long as I can remember. Since I was a teen I used to pick up Piz Buin, mainly because they offered a great range of SPF factors at the time, along with tan intensifiers.
The scent and consistency is lovely, and it makes my skin feel really nice. I like that it’s a once a day application, which I know doesn’t mean strictly once a day as it needs reapplication after sweating or swimming, but I have more trust in an all day application SPF as I feel like it has more resilience and staying power.
Garnier Ambre Solaire
Garnier is such a great brand and the best thing about this tanning lotion is that it really works to protect your skin and also gives great moisturisation and a nice finish to the skin. Garnier is also super easy to get a hold of, and you can find it in most supermarkets, drug stores, online and even in most holiday destinations, which I love because I know it’s a trusted brand.
VICHY Idéal Soleil
Vichy is a brand I love in terms of skincare, and their sun protection is reliable and lovely to use. The formulation is enriched with Vichy thermal spa water so it’s moisturising and kind to the skin, which is just what your skin needs when it’s dry from sitting in the sunshine.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios
La Roche-Posay is one of my favourite brands for when my skin is sensitive or troubled. I find it the kindest and most soothing in terms of its simplicity and skin conscious ingredients. I do find that sometimes on holiday or when I’m outside a lot during the summer, I can have sensitive skin from a change of environment and it’s during this time that I want a brand I know I can trust with my skins health and sensitivity.
If you have sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis or other conditions that might make your skin need some extra care, particularly in the sun, then this is a great brand to try.
