How to Actually Shop Online

Online Shopping

Shopping online can be both the best and worst thing ever. On one hand, it’s convenient, exciting and full of endless possibilities. On the other, it’s far too easy to end up with a basket full of things you don’t really need or love. I’ve definitely been there more than once. So if you want to make your online shopping a little smarter (and avoid those why did I buy this? moments), here’s how to actually shop online properly.

Make a List Before You Start

Before you even open a shopping tab, take a few minutes to look through your wardrobe. What are you missing? What do you need? Make a note of anything you’re looking to add and use Pinterest or Instagram for some outfit inspiration.

Even just glancing through your rails can remind you of what you already own. There’s nothing worse than realising your new order looks suspiciously like everything else you already have. Make a list and stick to it — it’ll save you time, money, and that feeling of regret when the parcel arrives.

Set a Budget

Having a budget in mind makes a huge difference when shopping online. It’s so easy to get carried away when you’re clicking through and adding to basket without really thinking.

Once you’ve built your basket, go back through and double-check what’s in there. Have you gone over budget? If so, start removing anything that doesn’t fit your list or that you’re not completely sure about. You can always add things to your wishlist to revisit later. Most of the time, if you weren’t sure to begin with, you’ll probably lose interest anyway.

Ask Yourself: Would I Buy It Full Price?

Sales are great in theory, but they can easily tempt you into buying things just because they’re reduced. Before you hit checkout, ask yourself — would I actually buy this full price? If the answer’s no, it might not be something you truly want.

Sale tags are designed to grab attention, but if the only reason it’s appealing is the discount, it’s probably not worth it.

Re-Check Your Basket Before You Checkout

Don’t just add things and immediately checkout. Take a few minutes to scroll back through your basket and make sure you still love everything you’ve added.

Sometimes after browsing for a while, your taste or focus shifts, and the first few things you picked no longer feel right. Check for duplicates, similar items, or anything that doesn’t make sense with what you already own. If it’s not a solid yes, take it out.

Try Everything On Properly

When your order arrives, make sure you try everything on properly — not over your pyjamas with your hair in a messy bun. Try things on when you feel put together, with your hair and makeup done, so you get a real sense of how it’ll look when you actually wear it.

Pair new items with things you already own, like trying a new jumper with your favourite jeans. You’ll get a much better idea of what works and what doesn’t. It’s easy to return something that might have looked great styled differently, or to keep something that doesn’t suit your everyday wardrobe at all.

Online shopping doesn’t have to end in regret or piles of returns. With a little thought and planning, you can make sure everything you order genuinely adds value to your wardrobe. Make your list, set your budget, and be a little more intentional with every click. The best wardrobes aren’t built overnight — they’re built with purpose.
