Festive drinks are one of the most simple ways to feel christmassy and the best thing is you can start creeping in a festive coffee or hot chocolate from September and no-one will even know… sneaky! The best thing about winter is that it means longer evenings, colder weather, more opportunities to cosy up on the sofa and lots of hot chocolates and lattes.
When autumn rolls around there’s nothing better than a pumpkin spice latte and when it comes to Christmas I’m not ready to let it go, so a pumpkin syrup is an essential from autumn right through to spring. It’s the best introduction to the festive season and as the leaves turn orange, brown and deep red, it’s truly PSL season. I love the Sweetbird pumpkin spice syrup which can be used in your coffee of course, but also for baking too!
As we move into winter and it gets a little colder and darker, I like to indulge in something more nutty like a hazelnut latte – think Ferrero Rocher in a mug, mmm! The Simply hazelnut syrup is one of my favourites and is also great for pouring (carefully, you definitely don’t want to have too much as these syrups are potent!), over ice cream and deserts.
Now we’re fast approaching Christmas, things are getting a little more festive and a gingerbread latte is where I’m at. This screams Christmas and encompasses all things festive in every sip! You can even add gingerbread syrup to a hot chocolate and indulge in the nostalgic flavour gingerbread carries – for me anyway!
If you’re not really into the spicy or nutty flavours, peppermint is one of the best syrups in both lattes and hot chocolate while also being completely different to any other flavoured syrups I’ve tried. Peppermint might not be to everyones taste, but it’s worth giving it a go if the others don’t tickle your fancy. The flavours reminds me of Christmas candy canes or peppermint chocolates like After Eights – yum!!
There are lots of syrups and even flavoured coffees and hot chocolates out there so you’ll absolutely find one for you so light the fire, grab a blanket, put on a Christmas movie and sip away.
